April 29, 2011 Humanitarian Aid without monitoring hurts North Korean people
It is easy to draw the logical conclusion that when people in a nation are going hungry, outside entities should provide humanitarian aid. Sadly, the situation in North Korea does not follow that line of thinking.
When the North Korean authorities have access to great amounts of rice, they impose market controls, those controls drive up the prices at the jangmadang (private street markets), and since 80% of the population relies on the jangmadang for food, life for the people of North Korea becomes more of a challenge.
